When Is Grain Spawn Ready for Bulk Substrate?

The short answer

Grain spawn is ready for bulk substrate once it is fully and evenly colonised — white mycelium visibly covering essentially all of the grain, with no obvious uncolonised patches left, and no sign of contamination anywhere in the bag. Using spawn before that point is possible but slower and less reliable; using it well past that point is usually fine but wastes bench time.

What "fully colonised" actually looks like

  • The grain is uniformly white with mycelium, not just at the surface visible through the bag but consistently throughout when you check from multiple sides
  • Individual grains are bound together loosely by mycelial strands — the mass holds together somewhat when tipped, rather than flowing like loose dry grain
  • No uncolonised patches of bare, translucent or differently coloured grain remain
  • The bag may have started to feel firmer or slightly more consolidated than a freshly inoculated one

Consolidation, and why it matters

As colonisation completes, grain spawn often becomes noticeably more solid — sometimes called "caking" or consolidation — where mycelium has bound the grain into a coherent mass rather than loose individual grains. Some consolidation is a normal and good sign of a healthy, well-established colonisation. Excessive consolidation into a dense, hard cake can make the spawn harder to break up evenly when you mix it into bulk substrate, so breaking a bag up as soon as it reaches full colonisation — rather than leaving it for an extended additional period — usually gives you an easier spawning session.

Timing varies by species, grain type, spawn quantity and room temperature, so treat these as rough orientation rather than a schedule to follow blindly.

Warmer room temperatures within a species' tolerated range generally speed colonisation; cooler rooms slow it. A bag that's noticeably outside these windows in either direction is worth a closer look rather than an automatic cause for concern — check the visual signs above before assuming something's wrong.

Worked example

You inoculated an oyster grain spawn bag on day 0, shook it once around day 8 when it was roughly 20% colonised, and by day 15 the bag looks uniformly white through every side you can see, feels slightly firmer than at inoculation, and has no smell. That's a solid, ready-to-use bag — you can spawn it into bulk substrate immediately, or hold it a few more days if your bulk substrate isn't ready yet.

What to do if it stalls

A bag that stops progressing partway through colonisation, with growth visibly slower than expected or apparently frozen at the same coverage over several checks, is worth troubleshooting rather than waiting out indefinitely.

  • Check temperature first. Too cold slows mycelium dramatically; too hot can stress or kill it. Confirm the bag's actual location temperature, not just the room's general setting.
  • Check for contamination masquerading as a stall. A bacterial or mould contamination can outcompete mycelium locally, which looks like "no further progress" rather than an obvious green or black patch at first. Inspect closely for any off colour, sliminess or smell — see the contamination guide.
  • Check the grain's hydration. Grain that was slightly too dry at inoculation can support initial colonisation but stall as mycelium struggles for moisture deeper in the bag.
  • Consider whether the inoculation point was too small relative to the bag. A very small amount of starter culture in a large bag of grain will simply take longer — that's not a stall, just a longer natural timeline.
  • If a portion looks healthy and a portion looks stalled or off, you can sometimes salvage the clean, well-colonised portion by carefully separating and using only that grain, discarding the rest. When in doubt about contamination, discard the whole bag rather than risk introducing it into a bulk substrate batch.

When it's acceptable to use spawn before 100% coverage

Some growers spawn bulk substrate at around 80–90% colonisation rather than waiting for the last visible patches, particularly for fast, robust species like oyster on a forgiving substrate. This trades a small amount of extra colonisation time in the bulk substrate for getting the batch moving sooner. It's a reasonable choice once you have experience judging your own bags, but not a good default while you're still learning what healthy full colonisation looks like on your setup.

FAQ

Can I use grain spawn that's been fully colonised for weeks?

Usually yes, though very old spawn can dry out, over-consolidate into a hard cake, or in some cases begin trying to pin inside the bag, none of which help. Using it reasonably promptly after full colonisation is the more reliable habit.

Does a fully white bag guarantee it's contamination-free?

No — some contamination is only visible once it produces its own colour or texture, which can take longer to appear than mycelial colonisation itself. A thorough visual check and a smell check both matter, not just overall whiteness.

My spawn colonised much faster than the typical window. Is that a problem?

Not necessarily — warmer conditions, a larger inoculation, or a naturally vigorous strain can all shorten colonisation time without anything being wrong. Check for the same visual signs of health as any other bag.

Should I refrigerate grain spawn once it's fully colonised, if I'm not ready to use it?

Some growers do hold fully colonised grain spawn in a fridge briefly to pause growth until they're ready, though prolonged cold storage isn't ideal for long-term viability. Using it reasonably soon after colonisation is generally the more reliable approach for a home setup.
