Recommended Gear

Equipment and supplies that support clean, repeatable gourmet and culinary mushroom cultivation in the UK — chosen because they fit the way Hyphae Fidelity records grows, not because a seller paid for placement. The app itself stays free.

Environmental monitoring

Supported integration

SwitchBot UK

Hyphae Fidelity already includes a SwitchBot integration. Once you connect your SwitchBot API credentials, the app can read supported environmental sensors and chart temperature, humidity and CO2 against your locations, alongside your target ranges and alerts.

Compatibility depends on the individual device's capabilities and on what the Hyphae Fidelity integration currently supports, so check a product's specification before buying. Not every SwitchBot product reports environmental readings.

Grow kits & ready-made bags

The lowest-effort starting points for legal gourmet species: ready-to-fruit kits, sterile grain bags and all-in-one bags. Cultures and spawn are covered in the supplier directory.

Gourmet mushroom grow kits

Ready-to-fruit oyster, lion's mane and shiitake kits and blocks for a first grow without any sterile work. Check the species and a packing date before buying.

Sterile mushroom grain / spawn bags

Pre-sterilised grain in filter-patch bags, ready to inoculate with a gourmet culture. Standalone grain still needs a fruiting substrate afterwards.

All-in-one mushroom grow bags

Grain plus a fruiting substrate in one sterile bag. Confirm the substrate suits the gourmet species you intend to grow.

Sterile workflow

Kit for the grain, substrate and agar prep steps the app records — sterilising, weighing, then working clean.

Pressure cookers

For sterilising grain and substrate jars or bags at pressure. Check the internal height fits your vessels.

Precision digital scales (0.1 g)

For weighing small quantities such as gypsum, supplements and culture media accurately.

Digital kitchen / batch scales

For weighing grain, dry substrate and water when mixing batches. A 5–10 kg capacity suits most home workflows.

Clear storage totes for a still-air box

A large clear plastic tote is the usual starting point for a home-made still-air box. It reduces air movement around your work; it does not make anything sterile.

Nitrile gloves & clean-work consumables

Disposable gloves, alcohol wipes and micropore tape for tidy transfers and inoculation work.

Petri dishes & agar media

Sterile Petri dishes and agar media for testing and isolating cultures. Pre-poured sterile plates avoid preparing and sterilising media yourself; agar powder needs a pressure cooker.

Sterile scalpels & disposable blades

Single-use sterile blades for agar transfers and tissue samples. Disposable blades avoid re-flaming and blunting; handle and dispose of them as sharps.

Isopropyl alcohol & surface sprays

70% isopropyl alcohol for wiping work surfaces, gloves, jar ports and the outside of containers before clean work. Keep it away from open flames.

Magnetic stir plates & stir bars

Optional for liquid culture: a stir plate keeps mycelium distributed in the broth. Not essential — periodic gentle swirling by hand also works.

Autoclaves: a purpose-built autoclave gives more control and capacity than a pressure cooker, but is far more expensive than most home growers need. If you do want one, dedicated laboratory equipment suppliers are usually a better route than general retail, so we don't list one here. Never modify a pressure vessel's safety valve or defeat its interlocks.

Jars, bags & sealing

Containers for grain spawn and fruiting substrate — reusable jars with filter lids, or filter-patch bags with an impulse sealer.

Wide-mouth preserving / mason-style jars

Reusable glass jars for small grain batches. Wide mouths make loading, shaking out and cleaning easier.

Mushroom jar filter lids & injection-port lids

Lids with a filter for gas exchange and a self-healing port, so a jar can breathe and be inoculated without being opened.

Filter-patch mushroom grow bags

Autoclavable polypropylene bags with a filter patch, for grain, sawdust blocks and Master's Mix. Check the filter rating and that the bag size fits your steriliser.

Impulse heat sealers

For sealing filter-patch bags after filling or inoculation. Match the sealing width to your bag size.

Fruiting environment

Monitoring and humidity control for the conditions you log against each location.

Digital thermo-hygrometers

Simple temperature and humidity readouts for tents and shelves — useful alongside manual location checks in the app.

CO2 meters

For judging fresh air exchange during pinning and fruiting.

Humidification equipment

Ultrasonic humidifiers and misting kit for holding fruiting humidity steady.

Inline / exhaust fans

For moving fresh air through tents and rooms. Actual delivered airflow falls with duct and filter resistance, so size above the theoretical figure.

Humidity controllers / humidistats

Switch a humidifier on and off around a target, rather than running it continuously against your ventilation.

Drying & storage

For preserving surplus harvest. A food dehydrator, not a room dehumidifier, is the right tool for drying mushrooms.

Food dehydrators

Forced warm airflow for drying surplus harvest until fully crisp. More reliable than air-drying or a room dehumidifier. Follow the manufacturer's food-drying guidance.

Airtight storage jars & food-safe desiccant

For storing dried mushrooms cool, dry and dark once they have cooled completely. Desiccant is optional; use only food-safe packs.

Labels & traceability

Printing the QR batch labels Hyphae Fidelity generates for jars, bags and plates.

Thermal label printers

For printing the QR batch labels Hyphae Fidelity generates, without ink or toner.

Direct thermal label rolls and sheets in sizes that suit jars, bags and plates.
